Who was Milton Erikson?
One of the most influential hypnotherapists of the 20th century is Milton Erickson (1902-80) and many would argue that his legacy is just as relevant in the 21st century. Milton was both a psychiatrist and hypnotherapist who practised in Phoenix Arizona in the USA.
He had a challenging life having been born colour blind, and contracting polio in his late teens. Yet some how he used this affliction to inspire insights into human behaviour that not only helped his personal life challenges but was to be highly effective in helping his clients. The term ”Ericksonian Hypnosis” refers to the style and patterns that Erikson developed and used in his practice.
What is Eriksonian Hypnosis?
Milton H. Erickson developed in the 1950′s a unqiue approach to hypnotherapy and hence coined the phrase “Ericksonian hypnotherapy” or “Neo-Ericksonian hypnotherapy.” Erickson would use a form of communication with his clients that involved complex langauge patterns such as double-binds (eg. you will will you not stop smoking?) in a casual conversational manner. He also utilised the clients pesonal history to find ways of heloing them change.
John Grinder and Bandler studied Erikson and other therapists such as Virginia Satir and brought many of their ideas to NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming. Part of this was what they termed the Milton Model.
Eriksonian hypnosis is particularly adept at helping people who are critical or analytical thinkersthrough bypassing the conscious mind and creating change in the powerful part of the mind, the subconscious. All of this can be done without necessarily inducing a formal trance.

Eriksonian Hypnosis Training
5 Path Hypnosis training is an advanced form of hypnosis education. All qualified hypnotherapists that belong to their national or even international hypnosis associations will have to have passed a certain level of competence and have their hypnosis training course approved by that hypnotherapy association.
Beyond this standard level of training, the dedicated and professional hypnotist will want to continue their hypnosis education and attend or undergo other hypnosis courses. These hypnosis courses are usually referred to as advanced courses because they are aimed at the qualified hypnotherapist and not the beginner.
5 Path Hypnosis Training
Cal Banyan recognised that there was a need to provide a structure to hypnosis sessions that helped their effectiveness and boosted the skills and confidence of the hypnoptist. To this end 5 Path hypnosis was developed and since its early days has been refined and many hypnotherapists around the world have taken this advance training.

It all depends on the issue or issues presented by the clent and the individual history and experiences that led to the issue the client wants to resolve.
Why is 5 Path Hypnosis Certification Useful?

What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is considered to be a state of mind and some hypnotherapists would refer to being in hypnosis as being in an altered state of mind. It can be induced by any competent therapist, and can even be induced by someone accidentally. If a hypnotherapist guides a person into hypnosis this is usually referred to as a hypnotic induction.
What is Hypnotic Induction?
This is just series of words that areconstructed and spoken in such as way that it brings about an altered state of mind called hypnosis (often referred to as being in trance). Entering the state of hypnosis can be done so with the help of a hypnotherapist or it can be self-induced. When hypnosis is self-induced it is referred to as self hypnosis.
What’s the Difference Between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is the altered state of mind that a person experiences. Hypnotherapy is use of the altered state for therapeutic purposes, such as to help someone stop smoking, become less stressed and more relaxed, to help change an unwanted habit or many other issues.
Hypnotist versus Hypnotherapist
In the USA, the titles of hypnotherapist and hypnotists can be used to mean the same thing; the use of hypnosis to change some unwanted issue. In the UK hypnotist may often refer to the use of hypnosis in entertainment such as in a stage hypnosis show. A hypnotherapist will be someone who uses hypnosis to help their clients therapeutically.
What is Hypnosis Like?
Hypnosis occurs naturally when we carry out our daily tasks. When driving a car along a boring highway you may find that your conscious mind has perceptively been elsewhere. This is called highway hypnosis and is perfectally normal.
Daydreaming is something which all of us will do on occasions. We often daydream when we are bored or are just resting. Daydreaming is another example of being in naturally occuring hypnosis.
Myths of Hypnosis
There are many myths surrounding hypnosis. Although the word “hypnos” refers to sleep in the greek language, hypnosis is not sleep. Despite appearances of what the stage hypnotist is doing on stage, you will not lose control when in hypnosis. Hypnosis is not about being inconscious either. In fact when in hypnosis you remain awake, alert and aware of your surroundings.
How Can Hypnosis Help Therapeutically?
When you are in the state of hypnosis, generally speaking, you are more relaxed. With your eyes closed you are able to engage the imagination with visual distractions. Depending on the type of session you are having, the hypnotherapist may include some of the following and other techniques:-
1) Give your direct suggestions to change the unwanted behaviour
2) Give indirect suggestions in the form of metaphors
3) Use confusional language to prevent conscious sabotage of suggestions
4) Encourage the voicing of past negative or unhelpful experiences and events that may have caused a habitual problem
5) Use your idea of your desired future (free of the issue) to reinforce positive changes.
Hypnosis has been used for many life issues since it was first studied. A Scottish doctor called James Esdaile used hypnosis for anesthesia. He performed many operations on patients in India before the advent of ether in the 18th century. According to Esdaile’s records his patients experienced little pain and he observed that they seemed to recover more quickly from the surgical procedure with less infection.
Hypnosis is here to stay. The British and American Medical Associations have both recognised it as a useful induced state of mind for stress and anxiety.
Many people who are seeking a change of career look to becoming a hypnotist or hypnotherapist. These people, maybe, just like yourself, have accepted that they want a professional that offers more than just monetary reward. They want the satisfaction of knowing the have helped changed someone’s life for the good.
